Scholarships Terms and Conditions

1. SCHOLARSHIP DESCRIPTION:
The sponsor of the two scholarships (hereafter referred to as the singular “Scholarship” when the context applies to both scholarships) is Letters to Strangers (“Sponsor"), with additional prizes offered by Shimmer (“Promotion Partner”).. By participating in the contest(s) (“Competition”), each Entrant unconditionally accepts and agrees to comply with and abide by these terms and conditions (“Terms”) and the decisions of Sponsor, which shall be final and binding in all respects, with any changes made by Sponsor over the course of one Competition period made publicly available as quickly as possible. Sponsor is responsible for the collection and processing of Entries and the overall administration of Scholarship. Entrants should look solely to Sponsor with any questions, comments or problems related to the Competition.

There are two contests: the MENTAL HEALTH WARRIOR SCHOLARSHIP and the MENTAL HEALTH CHANGEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP.
​

The Competition Period begins February 17th, 2025 and ends April 1st, 2025 at 11:59 PM Pacific Time.

2. ELIGIBILITY:
Any person who meets these eligibility criteria may enter the Competition. Eligible persons must:​

Be at least thirteen (13) years of age at the time of entry for the MENTAL HEALTH CHANGEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP
-
Be at least eighteen (18) years of age (or of the legal age of majority in their state of residence, whichever is older) at the time of entry for the MENTAL HEALTH WARRIOR SCHOLARSHIP

Applicants will receive additional consideration if they meet the following criteria:

Be between the ages of 13- and 26-years-old, since the Sponsor primarily serves the youth demographic
-
Belong to a Letters to Strangers Chapter or partner organization
​
Applicants to the MENTAL HEALTH WARRIOR SCHOLARSHIP must meet the following additional criteria:
-
Demonstrable difficulty due to finances, location, or other restrictive means to access or utilize professional mental health services. This will be verified upon selection of winners, and any Entrant who cannot provide adequate proof as judged by Sponsor will be ineligible for the award
​
Applicants to the MENTAL HEALTH CHANGEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP must meet the following additional criteria:

Must be currently enrolled (or enroll no later than February of 2026 unless deferring on a school-approved gap year) in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher learning (college, university, or trade school). This will be verified upon selection of winners, and any Entrant who cannot provide adequate proof as judged by Sponsor will be ineligible for the award. This condition applies regardless of the age of the Entrant.

Have done or is in the progress of proactively doing acts or events consistent with Sponsor’s organizational mission statement, as determined by Sponsor. This includes choosing to major in a mental health-related field (psychology, psychiatry, social work, etc.) and/or engaging in mental health advocacy/activism on a personal, volunteer level

Is applying for an academic, research, or otherwise personal scholarship intended for individual use. Applications proposing to use the award as funding or grant for a third-party organization will not be accepted.

Current employees, officers, directors and agents of Sponsor, Promotion Partner, and their related companies and members of their immediate families (defined as spouse, parents, siblings and children) and persons residing at the same address are not eligible to win. Void where prohibited or restricted by national, state, or local laws.

3. PRIZES:
​
a) THE MENTAL HEALTH WARRIOR SCHOLARSHIP
​
Grand Prize: 1 winner will receive a $ 3,000 USD award
​
The Prize will only be awarded and/or delivered to providers of professional health services as selected by the Prize Winner, or as reimbursement via check to the Prize Winner (upon Sponsor’s receipt of proof of Prize Winner’s healthcare costs. Only costs accrued by the Prize Winner between the six months prior to and five years after the public announcement of their win may be eligible for reimbursement, and all costs as well as method of proof of cost must be approved by Sponsor before reimbursement.) The Prize can be redeemed at one-time or be divided into installments, but must be redeemed within five years of the Entrant winning the Prize, or the remaining award money will be considered forfeited by the Winner. The Prize may only be used exclusively on professional health services, prescriptions, and other healthcare-related expenses. The Prize may not be assigned, transferred, or changed, except at the sole discretion of Sponsor. No cash equivalent prize will be awarded. The awarding of the Prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Terms and subject to Sponsor's verification of Entrant and Entrant's application. Entrants agree to be bound by Terms and agree that if a Prize Winner fails to provide proof of identity, refuses to provide required affidavit, refuses to complete and provide any requested forms, and/or is found to have violated the Terms or otherwise does not meet eligibility criteria, the Prize will be forfeited. Sponsor reserves the right to select another winner if the initial winner does not respond within 48 hours of notification. Sponsor’s decision regarding the winner is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into. Entrants understand that Sponsor is not liable for injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from participation in this Competition and acceptance, possession and use of the Prize. Sponsor is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Competition or in the announcement of the Prize. Taxes on the Prize are sole responsibility of the Prize Winner. The Prize Winner (or their parents or legal guardians if they are minors at the time of Winner selection) will be issued a W-9, 1099-MISC, and other necessary tax forms. Please note that if you are not a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, it is your responsibility to be aware of the necessary documentation and regulations for scholarships/monetary awards in your country. In some cases, international taxes may be applicable and reduce the amount of scholarship money you actually receive.

SHIMMER SCHOLARSHIP
​
All entrants to the Mental Health Warrior Scholarship are given the option to answer the following question on their application: "Are you interested in being considered for the Shimmer prizes? This would provide you with free access to virtual, English-speaking coaching and support for ADHD." Everyone who answers yes and submits a complete and rules-compliant application will be automatically considered for the Shimmer scholarship, generously supported by Promotion Partner Shimmer. Prizes available are as follow:

1 winner will receive 1 free month of Shimmer's ADHD coaching (valued at $230 USD)
-
3 winners will receive $125 USD off their first month of coaching with Shimmer
​
Winners will be randomly selected among those who are eligible. The prizes may not be assigned, transferred, or changed, except at the sole discretion of Sponsor and Promotion Partner. No cash equivalent prizes will be awarded. Facilitation of the award is subject to availability at the discretion of the Promotion Partner. The Prize Winner will have 3 months from the date on which the Sponsor makes contact with them to contact representatives at Shimmer who will support the redemption of prizes. The Prize Winner will be provided with contact details for Shimmer representatives.

The awarding of the prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Terms and subject to Sponsor's verification of Entrant and Entrant's application. Entrants agree to be bound by Terms and agree that if a Prize Winner fails to provide proof of identity, refuses to provide required affidavit, refuses to complete and provide any requested forms, and/or is found to have violated the Terms or otherwise does not meet eligibility criteria, the prize will be forfeited. Sponsor reserves the right to select another winner if the initial winner does not respond within 48 hours of notification. Sponsor’s decision regarding the winner is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into. Entrants understand that Sponsor is not liable for injuries, losses or damages of any kind arising from participation in this Competition and acceptance, possession and use of the prizes. Sponsor is not responsible for any typographical or other error in the printing of the offer, administration of the Competition or in the announcement of the prizes. Any taxes on the prizes are the sole responsibility of the Prize Winner. The Prize Winner will be issued any necessary tax forms. Please note that if you are not a US Citizen or Permanent Resident, it is your responsibility to be aware of the necessary documentation and regulations for scholarships/monetary awards in your country. In some cases, international taxes may be applicable and reduce the amount of scholarship money you actually claim.

b) THE MENTAL HEALTH CHANGEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP
​
Grand Prize: 1 winner will receive a $ 3,000 USD award, titled "Mental Health Changemaker Scholarship Winner"
​
Runner-Up Prize: 1 winner will receive a $ 1,000 USD award, titled "Mary Louther Changemaker Prize Recipient"
​
Finalist Prize: 8 winners will receive a $ 500 USD award, titled "Mary Louther Finalist Prize Recipients"
​
The Prize will be in the form of a check made payable directly to the accredited post-secondary institution of higher education attended by the Prize Winners (once the Prize Winners have enrolled in an accredited post-secondary institution of higher education and submitted proof of enrollment to Sponsor) OR to the Prize Winners if awarded for a personal project. Prize Winners must submit proof of enrollment on or before September 1st, 2025. The Prize can be redeemed at one-time or be divided into installments, but must be redeemed within five years of the Entrant winning the Prize, or the remaining award money will be considered forfeited by the Winners. The Prize may not be assigned, transferred, or changed, except at the sole discretion of Sponsor. No cash equivalent prize will be awarded. The awarding of the Prize is contingent upon full compliance with these Terms and subject to Sponsor's verification of Entrant and Entrant's application. 4. HOW TO ENTER:
​
a) Enter the Competition during the Competition Period online by visiting the entry form, which can be found on the following website at www.letterstostrangers.org/scholarship. Only one (1) Entry is allowed per person. All Entries must be the original work of the Entrant. Should the Sponsor or any of the Judges doubt the originality of an Entry, said Entrant will be disqualified from the Competition. If said Entrant is chosen as a Prize Winner, all prizes are forfeited by the Entrant and the Entrant must return any and all prizes received from Sponsor as part of the Competition.

Automated or robotic Entries submitted by individuals or organizations will be disqualified. Internet entry must be made by the Entrant. Any attempt by Entrant to submit more than one (1) Entry by using multiple/different email addresses, identities, registrations, logins or any other methods, including, but not limited to, commercial contest/sweepstakes subscription notification and/or entering services, will void Entrant's Entries and that Entrant may be disqualified. Final eligibility for the award of any prize is subject to eligibility verification as set forth in these Terms. All Entries must be posted by the end of the Competition Period in order to be considered for the Scholarship.

b) To enter via mail-in method of entry instead of the online method described above and receive one (1) Entry in the contest, hand write your completed application form (which can be printed from the online form) and mail it in a properly stamped envelope to: L2S SCHOLARSHIPS 2025, Letters to Strangers, 2058 North Mills Ave #718, Claremont, CA 91711, United States of America. All mail-in entries must be post-marked by March 29th, 2025, and received by April 5th, 2025, to be eligible. Photocopied, computer generated facsimiles, mechanically reproduced, automated, mass entries and entries by any means which subvert the entry process will be void. Entries become property of the Sponsor and will not be acknowledged or returned. Sponsor is not responsible for the loss of any Entries as a result of the mailing process. Entrants are responsible for the legibility of their application, which may affect the Judges’ decision.

Limit one (1) entry per person/valid e-mail address/or telephone number for the entire Competition Period, regardless of method of entry. Additional entries received from any person or e-mail address or telephone number during the Competition Period beyond the specified limit will be void.

5. WINNER SELECTION:
​
a) For the MENTAL HEALTH WARRIOR SCHOLARSHIP, one (1) Grand Prize winner and four (4) Shimmer scholarship winners will be randomly selected from all Entrants who are considered eligible under these Terms. Extra weight will apply to those who belong to a demographic with additional consideration.
​
b) For the MENTAL HEALTH CHANGEMAKER SCHOLARSHIP, the Sponsor will assemble a panel of Judges. Sponsor will provide the Judges with a shortlist of Entrants, who the Judges will then judge based on the following criteria: Impact, Complexity, Wow factor/uniqueness, and Challenge (overcoming adversity). Entrants who participate or have participated in Letters to Strangers programming will be preferred in the case of a tie. Sponsor will select the final Winners from the feedback submitted by the Judges. Sponsor reserves the right to select alternative Winners should the shortlisted Entrants become unsuitable for any reason, as determined by Sponsor. Four (4) Shimmer scholarship winners will also be randomly selected from all Entrants who are considered eligible under these Terms.

6. WINNER NOTIFICATION:
Winners will be notified by email at the email address provided in the Entry Information approximately four to five weeks after the end of the Competition Period. Potential Winners must accept a prize by email as directed by the Sponsor within 48 hours of notification. Sponsor is not responsible for any delay or failure to receive notification for any reason, including inactive email account(s), technical difficulties associated therewith, or Winner’s failure to adequately monitor any email account. All Entrants are encouraged to add libby@letterstostrangers.org to their email contacts or safe senders list to prevent notifications from being filtered as spam.
​
Any winner notification not responded to or returned as undeliverable may result in Prize forfeiture. The potential Prize Winner may be required to sign and return an affidavit of eligibility and release of liability, and a Publicity Release (collectively "the Prize Claim Documents"). No substitution or transfer of a Prize is permitted except by Sponsor. Sponsor’s decision regarding the winner is final, and no further correspondence will be entered into.

7. PRIVACY:
Entrant’s information collected by Sponsor for the purposes of these Terms will not be sold to any third parties and will be used in accordance with privacy laws of the United States. By entering the Competition, you acknowledge that any personal data provided by you in connection with the Competition will be processed as set out above and in accordance with our Privacy Policy which sets out full details of how we process personal data and how you can exercise your rights as a data subject, and our Promotion Partner’s Privacy Policy. Please ensure you have read and understood our Privacy Policy and our Promotion Partner’s Privacy Policy before entering the Competition.

Each entrant hereby agrees that Sponsor will own any copyright in any media or any other content produced in connection with the Competition worldwide.
​
Each Entrant consents that their full name, photo, likeness, biographical information, and any media produced in connection with the Competition may be used by Sponsor for advertising and promotional purposes, without any additional compensation or right of review, except where prohibited. In addition, each Entrant agrees to the possibility of reasonable requests for interview by the Sponsor. ​
​
Winners of the Shimmer scholarship prizes additionally consent to usage of their full name, photo, likeness, biographical information, and any media produced in connection with the Competition by Promotion Partner for advertising and promotional purposes, without any additional compensation or right of review, except where prohibited.
All of the above applies to the parents or legal guardians of the Entrant if the Entrant is a minor at the time of application.

NOTHING IN THESE OFFICIAL RULES LIMITS, EXCLUDES OR MODIFIES OR PURPORTS TO LIMIT, EXCLUDE OR MODIFY ANY STATUTORY CONSUMER GUARANTEES OR ANY IMPLIED CONDITION OR WARRANTY THE EXCLUSION OF WHICH FROM THESE OFFICIAL RULES WOULD CONTRAVENE ANY STATUTE OR CAUSE ANY PART OF THESE OFFICIAL RULES TO BE VOID (“NON-EXCLUDABLE GUARANTEES”). SUBJECT TO THE LIMITATIONS IN THE PRECEDING SENTENCE, ALL ENTRANTS AGREE, EXCEPT WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW, TO RELEASE, INDEMNIFY AND HOLD HARMLESS SPONSOR FROM AND AGAINST ANY CLAIM OR CAUSE OF ACTION ARISING OUT OF PARTICIPATION IN THE COMPETITION. ENTRANTS AGREE THAT, EXCEPT WHERE PROHIBITED BY LAW INCLUDING IN RELATION TO THE NON-EXCLUDABLE GUARANTEES, SPONSOR IS NOT LIABLE FOR INJURIES, LOSSES OR DAMAGES OF ANY KIND ARISING FROM PARTICIPATION IN THIS COMPETITION AND ACCEPTANCE, POSSESSION, MISUSE, AND USE OF ANY PRIZE. RELEASED PARTIES ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY TYPOGRAPHICAL OR OTHER ERROR IN THE PRINTING OF THE OFFER OR THESE TERMS, THE ADMINISTRATION OF THE COMPETITION, OR IN THE ANNOUNCEMENT AND AWARD OF ANY PRIZE. The above releases will not apply to liability for death or personal injury caused by the negligence of Sponsor or liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation or breach of Sponsor’s obligations under these Terms.

THE RELEASED PARTIES ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE IN ANY WAY FOR ANY EXPENSES, OMISSIONS, DELAYS, OR RE-ROUTING RESULTING FROM ANY ACTS OF ANY GOVERNMENT OR AUTHORITY. AND EACH PRIZE WINNER ACKNOWLEDGES THAT THEY ARE SOLELY RESPONSIBLE FOR ANY ACTIONS, CLAIMS OR LIABILITIES OF THEIR GUEST(S) RELATED TO ANY COMPETITION-RELATED ACTIVITY, INCLUDING, WITHOUT LIMITATION, ANY ACTIONS, CLAIMS OR LIABILITIES RELATED TO THE GUEST(S)’S USE OF THE PRIZE. The above releases will not apply to liability for death or personal injury caused by the negligence of Sponsors or liability for fraud or fraudulent misrepresentation or breach of Sponsors’ obligations under these Terms.

8. LIMITATION OF LIABILITY:
Subject to the Non-Excludable Guarantees, all entrants agree that Sponsor is not responsible and/or liable for any of the following, whether caused by Sponsor, the Entrant or by human error: entries that are submitted by illegitimate means (such as, without limitation, by an automated computer program); any lost, late, incomplete, illegible, mutilated, or misdirected Entries, e-mail, mail, or Competition-related correspondence or materials or postage-due mail; any error, omission, interruption, defect, or delay in transmission or communication; viruses or technical or mechanical malfunctions; interrupted or unavailable cable or satellite systems; errors, typos or misprints in these Terms,, in any Competition-related advertisements or other materials; failures of electronic equipment, computer hardware or software; lost or unavailable network connections, or failed, incorrect, incomplete, inaccurate, garbled or delayed electronic communications or entry information. Sponsor is not responsible for electronic communications that are undeliverable as a result of any form of active or passive filtering of any kind, or insufficient space in Entrant’s e-mail account to receive e-mail messages. Sponsor is not responsible, and may disqualify an Entrant, if Entrant’s e-mail address, telephone, or other contact information does not work or is changed without Entrant giving prior written notice to Sponsor. Sponsor is not responsible for any changes or unavailability of the Competition website that may interfere with the Competition (including any limitations, any restrictions, or any conditions on the Sponsor’s ability to use the Competition website for the Competition as set forth herein that are not acceptable to Sponsor) or ability of an Entrant to timely enter, receive notices or communicate with Sponsor, in which case Sponsor, in its sole discretion, may terminate or modify the Competition. Without limiting any other provision in these Terms, Sponsor is not responsible or liable to any Entrant or Prize Winner or any person claiming through such Entrant or Prize Winner for failure to supply the Prize or any part thereof in the event that any of the Competition activities or the Sponsor’s’ operations or activities are affected, as determined by the Sponsor in its sole discretion, including, without limitation, by reason of any acts of God, any action, regulation, order or request by any governmental or quasi-governmental entity (whether or not the action, regulations, order or request proves to be invalid), equipment failure, threatened terrorist acts, terrorist acts, air raid, blackout, act of public enemy, earthquake, war (declared or undeclared), fire, flood, epidemic, explosion, unusually severe weather, hurricane, embargo, labor dispute or strike (whether legal or illegal) labor or material shortage, transportation interruption of any kind, work slow-down, civil disturbance, insurrection, riot, or any law, rule, regulation, order or other action adopted or taken by any governmental, federal, state, provincial or local government authority, or any other cause, whether or not specifically mentioned above. The above releases will not apply to the extent arising out of the failures or defaults of the Sponsor.

Entrants agree to not damage or cause interruption of the Competition and/or prevent others from interacting with the Competition. Sponsor reserves the right to restrict or void Entries or participation from any IP address if any suspicious Entry and/or participation is detected. Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to void Entries or sales (as applicable) of any Entrants who Sponsor believes have attempted to tamper with or impair the administration, security, fairness or proper play of this Competition. Sponsor’s failure to or decision not to enforce any provision in these Terms will not constitute a waiver of that or any other provision. In the event there is an alleged or actual ambiguity, discrepancy or inconsistency between disclosures or other statements contained in any Competition-related materials and/or these Terms (including any alleged discrepancy or inconsistency in these Terms), it will be resolved in Sponsor’s sole discretion. Entrants waive any right to claim ambiguity in the Competition or these Terms. If Sponsor determines at any time in its sole discretion that the Prize Winner or potential Prize Winner is disqualified, ineligible, in violation of these Terms, or engaging in behavior that Sponsor deems obnoxious, inappropriate, threatening, illegal or that is intended to annoy, abuse, threaten or harass any other person, Sponsor reserves the right to disqualify that Prize Winner or potential Prize Winner, even if the disqualified Prize Winner or potential Prize Winner may have been notified or displayed or announced anywhere. If the Competition is not capable of running as planned for any reason, Sponsor reserves the right, in its sole discretion, to cancel, modify or suspend the Competition and award the Prize from eligible entries received prior to cancellation, modification, or suspension or as otherwise deemed fair and appropriate by Sponsor. If any person supplies false information, obtains Entries by fraudulent means or is otherwise determined to be in violation of these Terms in an attempt to obtain any Prize, Sponsor may disqualify that person and seek damages from them and that person may be prosecuted to the full extent of the law. CAUTION: ANY ATTEMPT TO DAMAGE ANY ONLINE SERVICE OR WEBSITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATIONS OF THE COMPETITION VIOLATES CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS. IF SUCH AN ATTEMPT IS MADE, SPONSOR MAY DISQUALIFY ANY ENTRANT MAKING SUCH ATTEMPT AND MAY SEEK DAMAGES TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

9. OWNERSHIP:
By submitting an Application, Entrant acknowledges and agrees that: (a) Sponsor will own their Application, including their written response submission, and (b) as between Entrant and Sponsor, Sponsor will own all publishing rights in and to the Application and the written response submission. However, Sponsor will seek permission from Entrant first before utilizing any of these publishing rights. Should Entrant not respond within one week to Sponsor’s request, Sponsor will not publish any private/personal identifiable information as well as any information on the application marked as confidential among Sponsor, Judges, and Entrant, and will continue to not publish said information unless Sponsor receives expressed consent from Entrant. Each Entrant hereby irrevocably grants, transfers, assigns and conveys to the Sponsor, its successors and assigns, all present and future right, title and interest of every kind and nature whatsoever, including, without limitation, all copyrights, and all rights incidental, subsidiary, ancillary or allied thereto (including, without limitation, all derivative rights) in and to the application and the written response submission(s) throughout the universe, in perpetuity, by means of any and all media and devices whether now known or hereafter devised (the "Rights"). Sponsor shall have the right, in its sole discretion, to edit, composite, scan, or duplicate, the Application and written response submission(s) for any purpose which Sponsor deems necessary or desirable, and each Entrant irrevocably waives any and all so-called moral rights they may have in the Application and written response submission(s) submitted by them. Each Entrant hereby acknowledges that such Entrant does not reserve any rights in and to the Application and the written response submissions.

10. DISPUTES/GOVERNING LAW:
Each Entrant agrees that, except where prohibited by law, any and all disputes, claims and causes of action arising out of or in connection with this Competition, or any Prizes awarded, will be resolved individually, without resorting to any form of class action, by final and binding arbitration under the Rules of the American Arbitration Association and held by a single arbitrator at a location in the state of California, with such proceedings being confidential. If a court should determine the mandatory arbitration provision above to be void, unenforceable or waived by the parties, then the sole and exclusive forum for any and all litigation arising out of or related to this Contest or these Official Rules shall be an individual action (without resort to class action) brought in California.

Further, in any dispute, under no circumstances will Entrants and/or Prize Winners be permitted to obtain awards for, and all Entrants and/or Prize Winners hereby waive all rights to claim, punitive, exemplary, special, indirect, incidental or consequential damages, including but not limited to damages from usage of Prize such as for healthcare services, treatments, and otherwise, and also including but not limited to attorneys’ fees, costs and expenses, and all Entrants and/or Prize Winners hereby further waive all rights to have damages multiplied or increased. Sponsor’s liability to any Entrant and/or Prize Winner will be limited in any circumstances to a maximum for all claims up to the value of the Prize. All disputes arising out of, concerning or connected to the Competition or the interpretation, validity, enforceability or interpretation of these Terms will be governed by and construed in accordance with the laws of the State of California applicable therein, without regard to choice-of-law principles. The Sponsor is not liable for any actions by the Winner which do not abide by the Winner's local and national laws, including any laws which apply in the Winner's region but not in the United States.
